癌は日本人の主要な死因です。一部の癌の生存率は向上していますが、その発生数・死亡数は増加し続けています。そして2型糖尿病の方は、糖尿病でない方に比べて発癌リスクが高く、死亡率も高いと言われています。
　メトホルミンは一般的に使用されている糖尿病治療剤です。近年、メトホルミンには発癌抑制作用、抗癌剤治療に対する反応性を高めることを示す研究が増えています。しかし、個々の癌の効果については議論の余地があり、メトホルミンの発癌抑制作用のメカニズムも完全には解明されていないのが現状です。そこで現在分かっているメトホルミンと癌の関係をまとめてみました(1)。
　メトホルミンは乳癌(2)、肺癌(3)、大腸癌(4)、胃癌(5)、肝臓癌(6)、膵臓癌(7)、子宮内膜癌(8) などで発癌抑制効果があることが分かってきました。前立腺癌はメトホルミンとの関係がまだはっきりとわかっていません。糖尿病が確認された方は、まずメトホルミンを発癌抑制作用のため飲むことをお勧めします。
　ただし、メトホルミンを用いた癌に関する研究のほとんどが2型糖尿病患者を対象としたもので、糖尿病を持たない人の癌に関する研究はほとんどありません。今後は糖尿病のない人でもメトホルミンによる抗発癌抑制用があるかどうか研究を待ちたいものです。
